چکیده

Ammonium and nitrate uptake was measured in 6 European tidal estuaries (Ems. Rhine, Scheldt, Loire, Gironde and Douro) using I5N-tracer techniques. Uptake rates of ammonium and nitrate ranged from 0.005 to 1.56 pmol N 1-' h-I and 0.00025 to 0.25 pmol N 1-' h-I, respectively, and differed significantly between and within estuaries. Analysis of nitrogen uptake using the relative preferential index (RPI) indicated ammonium to be the preferred substrate. The turnover times of particulate nitrogen (0.7 to 31 d) and dissolved ammonium (0.1 to 27 d) were similar to or shorter than estuarine-water residence times, whereas turnover times of dissolved nitrate (19 to 2160 d ) were longer than residence times. Assimilation of nitrate in the water colurnn of estuaries consequently does not influence its distribution, and most nitrate entenng or produced in estuanes flushes through unless signiiicant denitrification andlor burial in the sedirnent occur. As ammonium and particulate nitrogen are efficiently recycled, most allochthonous organic matter is extensively rnicrobiaiiy modified before export, burial, or consumption by higher trophic levels.

Nanoplankton and picoplankton abundance and community grazing on picoplankton were deterrnined in surnmer and autumn at several stations in a productive coastal environment (Georges Bank. NW Atlantic Ocean) and in an oligotrophic oceanic ecosystem (Sargasso Sea). Ranges of heterotrophic nanoplankton (HNAN) abundance were 1.2 to 3.6 X 103 ceils rnl-' on Georges Bank, and 2.2 to 6.8 X 10' ceiis m...

Marine Soundscape Ecology

In the face of accelerated climate change, monitoring biodiversity has become a critical task for ecologists. Habitat loss is occurring at an alarming rate both in terrestrial and marine ecosystems, resulting in endangerment and extinction of species up to 1,000 times faster than natural rates. However, traditional biodiversity measurements are logistically and financially difficult, making bio...

Satellite telemetry of marine megavertebrates: the coming of age of an experimental science

Wildlife telemetry research has expanded greatly in the last 2 decades, with the application of satellite tracking and archival logging technologies to study the ecology and conservation of marine mammals, birds, fishes, and turtles. Widespread and expanding use of satellite tracking to study movements and habitats of marine megavertebrates warrants a review of progress to date and a discussion...

Extensive geographic and ontogenetic variation characterizes the trophic ecology of a temperate reef fish on southern California (USA) rocky reefs.

Interactions between predator and prey act to shape the structure of ecological communities, and these interactions can differ across space. California sheephead Semicossyphus pulcher are common predators of benthic invertebrates in kelp beds and rocky reefs in southern California, USA. Through gut content and stable isotope (δ13C and †15N) analyses, we investigated geographic and ontogenetic v...
